Description

Know your Aquarium by Richard Haas. An aquarium is a glass-sided container of water in which fish and aquatic plants, and sometimes other organisms such as snails or aquatic amphibians, are kept captive in relationship only approximating that found in nature. The reasons for which hobbyists keep aquariums are primarily esthetic, that is. they are pleasing to look at. They rarely are set up in an effort to duplicate nature, nor indeed can they represent an accurate picture of a bit of a pound or stream. The natural condition generally involves much greater volumes of water per fish than in any aquarium and includes such aspects of the natural world as predators (one could hardly keep a heron or fish-eating snake around to authenticate and aquarium), dead vegetation, all manner of aquatic insects and their larvae, occasional flooding and drying out, etc.'
