Description

Porsche by Chris Harvey. 'Generations come and generations go, but Porsche sporting cars seem to go on forever. Their timeless appeal can only be seen as a tribute to the genius who inspired them, Professor Ferdinand Porsche. Previously, Professor Porsche had designed all manner of machines, culminating in the first Volkswagen people's car in 1936. By the 1930, Professor Porsche was running his own design studio, producing blueprints for everything from racing cars to tanks. Germany was his adopted home, and there Hitler was persuaded to let his studio produce a glamorous competition version of the austere Volkswagen for the Berlin-to-Rome Axis race in 1939. The race never happened, but two of the teams cars survived as an inspiration for the Porsche family to set up a new manufacturing company at Gmund, in their native Austria, after the war. Times were hard and they made their first car from spare parts, mostly from old Volkswagens. The book has many full-colour photographs and specifications for the various models.
