Description

The Running Foxes by Joyce Stranger. ' The Running Foxes is a story of countrymen, the way they live, the animals they love, the hounds they breed. It is above all the story of a vixen who teaches her cubs how to hunt for themselves, and how to escape from men and dogs. It is a story which captures the reciprocal devotion between men and dogs, and the hard life of farmers in a barren country where blizzards and floods disrupt the lives of animals as well as men. The magic is of foxes running wild over the Cumberland Hills, of an Otter cub adopted by a poacher, of young hounds caught in a badger-run, and of dour Lakeland farmers who hunt on foot and are out-witted and out-run by a vixen and her cubs. The book has medium general wear but remains a good read.
