Description

Huskies of the Heroic Era of Antarctic Exploration by David Jensen. 'Huskies helped explorers and scientists in the Antarctic for over a century. They first stepped ashore in Antarctica on February 17, 1899 and left their paw marks on th ice for the very last time 95 years later in 1994. During those years they made an incalculable contribution to science and exploration before the inclusion of an environmental clause in the Antarctic Treaty. This required the removal of all non-native species because of the threat of distemper, a dog disease, being spread to native seals. Australia was one of the leaders in the use of "husky power" with over a thousand used at Australian bases for nearly 50 years. Scientists and explorers from several other countries also used huskies until the decision was made to withdraw them from the Antartic.
