Vice-Admiral Harold Hickling was in his fishing-lodge at Lake Taupo New Zealand, when he read the first shattering news of the collision between the aircraft-carrier Melbourne and the destroyer Voyager, the worst peacetime disaster in Australian naval history. Courage and presence of mind were applied to rescue the survivors but Melbourne had broken Voyager in two, and the impact and sinking of the destroyer caused the loss of eight-two men.
