Description

The Rose and the Lily. The Story of Two South American Saints by Frances Parkinson Keyes. Rosa de Flores was born at Lima, in what is now Peru, in 1568 and died there in 1617. Mariana Paredes y Flores was born in Quito, a city north of Lima in what is now Ecuador, shortly after Rosa's death, and lived only twenty-six years, dying in 1645. Both Rosa and Mariana were beautiful; both were children of the Spanish Conquest; both were subjects of the Spanish colonial regime in the New World; and both, as one authority wrote, "bear witness to the fact that amid the injustice and inhumanity inseparably bound up with the Spanish conquest of America, the leaven of Christianity was still at work". The dust jacket has some small closed tears and tape repair but the price is unclipped. The book has light foxing along the page edges and ghosting from the dust jacket on the inside front page. The binding remains tight and pages bright.
