Description

Poisonous Plants in New Zealand by Jose Steuart. In New Zealand there are some 50 or more plants known or suspected to be toxic to humans when eaten. Although some of these are rare, it is still as well to know them, as children will often eat berries, flowers, leaves, even bark, of many plants. Not all plant poisoning in New Zealand occurs in children; some serious plant poisoning has resulted from experiments conducted by adults. Curiosity as to the effect of castor beans that had already sublethally poisoned his children, in turn led to poisoning of their father. Rhubarb usually poisons more adults than children. As well as plants being toxic when eaten, there are many which are touch irritants, causing a rash, and even eczema. The most common of these are also dealt with.
