Description

The Opossum in New Zealand - Habits and Trapping. The opossum from Australia introduced and liberated by private individuals and acclimatisation societies between 1837-40 and 1898 formed the initial colonies from which stock was artificially dispersed. The main motive for introduction was establishment of a fur industry. Spread up to 1920-30 was accelerated by the release, both authorised and illegal, of New Zealand - bred stock in unoccupied habitat, thus creating numerous colonies.
