Reed, veteran writer and publisher, had spent much of his so-called retirement walking up, down, and across New Zealand; so, when his great-nephew, manager of the Sydney branch of the firm founded by A. H. Reed, dared him to walk from Sydney to Melbourne, he wasn't altogether astonished when "A. H." took him on.
