Description
The Hoiho. New Zealand's Yellow-Eyed Penguin by Adele Vernon and photographs by Dean Schneider. The remarkable yellow-eyed penguin, named hoiho - "noise shouter" - by the Maori because of its distinctive calls and trills, is found only in New Zealand. Unlike many penguins that live in large colonies on bleak terrain, the hoiho is a reclusive, forest-dwelling bird. New Zealanders are determined to prevent the hoiho from joining the growing list of extinct species, and an extensive "save the hoiho" campaign is underway. There is a fairly large inscription on the inside front cover explaining that "this book was compiled by Adell and Dean whilst they were residents in Brashes Titiroa Homestead".
