Description

To Fight for the Empire: An Illustrated History of New Zealand and the South African War, 1899 - 1902 by John Crawford with Ellen Ellis. 'The South African War (often known as the 'Boer War' ) was a pivotal point in New Zealand history. Although its memory has now been overshadowed by that of the two World Wars, at the time New Zealand soldiers were praised for their bravery and their practicality (and for being better disciplined than the Australians). New Zealand sent over 6,500 troops to the war, along with thousands of horses and a medical contingent, and local communities raised over 100.000 pounds for the war effort. It was a time when New Zealand's national identity and our bonds with other parts of the British Empire developed and strengthened.
