Description

Rita Angus. Published in association with the exhibition RITA ANGUS organised by the National Art Gallery and held there from 9 December 1982 - 6 March 1983. 'The notion of preparing a major survey exhibition of the work of Rita Angus has been one entertained by many public art galleries and curators over the last ten to fifteen years. Even during her lifetime one far-sighted individual, James Mack, planned to stage a representative exhibition, with the artist's agreement. It has, however, only been possible to realise the idea more than a decade after Rita's death. This has been due to a variety of reasons, not least of which was the lack of professional and practical facilities in art galleries. It is only in the last five years that the National Art Gallery has been able to build up the skeletal professional staff to make such an ambitious project possible.' From the Preface of this book by Luit H. Bieringa.
