"The first edition of this work was published in 1904. It was much more successful than the authors, or even the publishers, had anticipated, and a second edition was found to be necessary in the following year, 1905. Captain Hutton was then suffering from a serious illness. He went to England for a change, and was not able to take any part in the work of seeing the second edition through the press. In this edition, the third, there have been many alterations. Archdeacon Williams, of Gisborne, has kindly revised the list of Maori names of birds." From the preface of this book by James Drummond. The book has light to medium general wear with the cloth hinges exposed both in the front and back cover. There is some heavy staining on the inside back free pages and light age staining down the page edges but overall the book remains most readable with all apparent illustrations being present.
