Description

Sporting Guns by Richard Akehurst. 'By the sixteenth century the hand gun had been developed to a form where it could be aimed and handled reasonably well. Both the peasantry and aristocracy of Europe were quick to appreciate its advantages over the bow fro certain types of hunting: the peasantry could now shoot a wider variety of fowl, since their guns were loaded with small shot which gave a fair spread. As for the aristocracy the matchlock gun and the later the matchlock rifle proved more powerful than the crossbow and replaced it for use against the larger animals which still abounded in the forests of Europe.' The book has some sun fading on the front cover but internally the book remains tight and bright.
