Description

The Thames Line 1898 - 1990. Compiled by R. Brett Green and Trevor Lees. "Railways are necessarily constructed slowly in New Zealand but in this case they must have broken the record because for 29 years they have made about a mile-and-a-half of railway a year". A Quote from The Hon. A. J. Cadman, Minister of Railways, speach at the opening of The Paeroa - Thames Railway, 19th December, 1898. This publication is based on two earlier booklets issued in conjunction with excursions over the Thames Branch Line - "Thames Excursion" run on 22nd of March 1958 by the NZR and LS (Auckland Branch) and "Steam at the Rainbow's End" run on 18th April 1964 by the R.E.S. (Inc), and has been compiled and updated as a souvenir for passengers on the R. E. S. (Inc) steam-hauled excursion to Thames on 3rd March 1990, nearly 23 years after the last steam - hauled passenger train ran from Auckland to Thames.
