Description

Short Studies in Shakespeare by A. Wilson, M.A. (Rector of Otago Boys' High School, Dunedin) 'Had these studies been written in the first instance for publication, they would have taken another form. As it usual with such things, they would have followed some definite system of classification, chronological or otherwise: and the plays dealt with would have received more serious and exhaustive treatment. But they were originally addressed to a Shakespeare Society - the Dunedin Shakespeare Club - of which the writer has the honour to be President, and were meant merely to serve as introductory to certain plays, or parts of plays, selected for public reading. The fact they were intended for an audience of friends accounts for an occasional lightness of treatment that may to some readers appear unseemly in papers dealing with a subject of literary importance. If the occasional ex cathedra tone of these addresses should I offend. the only excuse is that the writer was in cathedra when they were spoken.' From the Prefatory Note of this book written Dunedin, November 1st, 1898. The green cloth boards have light to medium general wear with bumps to the corners and some light fading of the spine. The binding remains tight and pages bright but some moderate foxing on the front and rear pastedown pages.
