Description

Antarctica: An Artist's Logbook by David Barker. With Foreword by Sir Edmund Hillary. 'An artist's log of a voyage through the Strait of Magellan, across the infamous Drake Passage and down to the Antarctic Peninsula. David Barker records, in watercolour, pastels and pencil sketches, encounters with whales, seals and penguins, the colours of the ice and the blue, cream, brown and even dark icebergs that they sailed past.' In 1988 internationally acclaimed artist David Barker joined the Pelagic Antarctica Expedition as the official expedition artist. The sixteen-metre, steel-hulled sloop Pelagic was skippered by Skip Novak (captain of the Soviet 1990 Whitbread entry Fazisi) and crewed by ten companions - mountaineers, film-makers, professional adventurers, a scientist, and a kitten. They sailed through the Strait of Magellan, across the infamous Drake Passage, and down to the Antarctic Peninsula.' The dust jacket has light general wear with some small stain spots and light creasing. A previous owner's name has been blacked-out on the top corner of the inside front page but overall a tight and bright book.
