Description

Soldier. A Novel of war by John A. Lee DCM. 'Soldier is the story of one man's war, of a New Zealand private who won the DCM for gallantry in action and later, when his nerves had become shell-shocked to the point where suicide was beckoning, had his arm shattered by a German shell. The narrative begins with the soldier penniless on leave in London seeking a free meal in a YMCA canteen. Here he meets Hawea, a New Zealand girl with a prosperous high-country background. The soldier returns to France, plays his part in stemming the German break-through in March 1918, loses his left arm, and is sent to the New Zealand military hospital at Brockenhurst in the New Forest. He ad Hawea meet again, then the soldier is invalided back to New Zealand.' Both the dust jacket and the book are in a very tight and tidy condition.
