Description

Jim Henderson's Open Country by Jim Henderson. Colour photographs by Geoff Moon and Illustrations by Marydene Porter. A reprint of the original 1965 first edition. 'If the sheep suddenly began speaking French Jim never would have noticed, buried deep in a book.' So Jim Henderson's mother Mabel would say. Daughter of a Scot babe-in-arms Sarah, who reached Nelson in the founder-settlers' sailing ship 'Mary Anne', 1842, she herself pioneered a long-stump littered sheepfarm high on the rough, rocky Takaka Hill (Nelson), Jim Henderson's birthplace and boyhood adventure land. Books continued to remain his greatest love, through the following Nelson College days and daily and weekly journalism, then especially precious in the drab and dangerous five years as a gunner and amputee prisoner-of-war, left for dead on the North African battlefield of Sidi Rezegh.' The dust jacket has light general wear with some small curls and spot stains but the book remains tight and bright. Previous owners name or inscription on inside front page.
