Description

Top Yarns From the New Zealand Farmer. 'In the autumn of 1979, we of the New Zealand Farmer began to voice concern over what we saw as a serious stagnation of home-grown literature that is not merely about the country but is of the country. The outcome was the Top Yarn contest, "an effort to encourage newcomers to have a go, to provide an outlet for people already writing and to enable our readers to taste the results." The respnse was an avalanche. From many hundreds of submissions we selected for publication in the Farmer enough to fill several volumes of this size. They came from bushmen, truck drivers, shearers, sharemilkers, farm wives, agricultural consultants; from gracious homesteads and alternative-lifestyle huts. Some were polished, neatly typed. Most were scrawled. Few were from previously published writers. There was a story shyly written and put away in the top drawer 18 years earlier, and the stirred memory expressed with the aid of a couple of whiskies within an hour of arrival of the Farmer issue conveying our invitation.; From the Foreword of this entertaining booklet.
