Description

Elephant Boy by Susan Williams. 'Mrs. Williams first book was the story of her husband, the legendary Elephant Bill. It was a great success both with the public and the critics, and many of the latter commented that she shared her husband's gift for vividly describing life in the jungle with its animals and its people. Mrs. Williams lived for years with her husband while he was working among the elephants and acquiring the knowledge of them that made him world famous. She was equally interested, particularly in that unique relationship between man and beast which is that of oozie (elephant boy) and his elephant. In this book she has told the day by day story of Ba Tu, one of the elephant boys who had worked for her husband. She tells how Ba Tu was born in the primitive native conditions of the elephant camp in the heart of the jungle; of his life as a boy and the great day, when at the age of fourteen, he was entrusted with a young elephant of his own to train and look after for the rest of his working life. The author describes in vivid detail and with and acute observation how Ba Tu and Po Sein, his elephant, learn to work together when the elephant's training starts.' The dust jacket has light to medium general wear with some small tape repairs but the book remains in a tight and bright condition.
