Description

Stories from the River by Sylvia Ashton-Warner. 'Sylvia Ashton-Warner was born in 1908 and died in 1984. He first novel, Spinster, was ranked by Time magazine as one of the five best novels published in 1959, and the same honour was bestowed on her second novel, Incense to Idols, in 1960. Stories from the River is a collection of her stories, chosen by the Author. They were published between 1948 and 1974, some in magazines and others in two books now out of print - Greenstone (1966) and Myself (1967). The stories are deceptively simple; they can be read with enjoyment by children and are ideal for classroom use. But they are also complex: allegory. myth and fairy-tale are woven into these glimpses of life on the River (Wanganui) which gave rise to Spinster. Their mood varies from the joyful to the elegiac, culminating in the prose masterpiece, Greenstone, which embraces all of the obsessive themes of Ashton-Warner's works.'
