A Letter from James by Mona Anderson. 'On 28 February 1880 the sailing ship Westland, after a record-breaking voyage of eighty-six days, from Plymouth, anchored in Lyttelton Harbour. On board were Susannah Tarling, her husband James and two sons, James and Willie. Two younger Tarling boys, Johnny and Thomas, had died on the long voyage out. Susannah was Mona Anderson's grandmother, whom the author first introduced in her third book, Over the River: She was a cripple. She was very small, with her silver hair parted down the centre. and a little bob at the back. She was patient, kind, witty, wise and sad.
