Description

The Line of the Road: A History of Manawatu County 1876 - 1976 by M. H. Holcroft. 'On 4 January 1877 nine men came to the little courthouse in Palmerston North to attend a meeting. They were the first members of the Manawatu County Council; and their task - awe-inspiring in retrospect - was to replace the Wellington Provincial Council as the regional authority for the whole of the West Coast between the Waikanae and Rangitikei Rivers. This book tells the story of what happened in the next hundred years. It speaks of roads and bridges and subdivision as the country was opened for closer settlement. The early families are introduced, and something is seen of their founders and homes, and their work on the land. Major undertakings are described, especially the construction of the Sanson Tramway, an enterprise unique in the history of local government in New Zealand. Manawatu County was the owner and operator of a light railway for 60 years; and the story of its troubles and triumphs, a remarkable one, provides one of the book's most interesting chapters.' The dust jacket has much wear with stains and scuffing and small splits but the book remains tight and bright.
