A pithy quotation can be a good opening gambit, capturing attention and triggering a lone of thought. I began collecting quotations about 50 years ago. They came in handy when writing speeches or dispatches as I worked (from 1947 to 1983) with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Moreover, I came to enjoy the company of these quotations, scribbled as they were on bits of paper in the days before we had copying machines.' The book has light to medium general wear with small spot stains on the covers but overall a tight and bright copy.
