Description

The Restless Sky: The Autobiography of an Airman by Air Vice-Marshall C. E Kay. 'This book is a record of a distinguished and eventful flying career - spanning the years from the time "when those of my calling were satisfied and even thrilled to chug through the air at a mere 80 m.p.h.", to the modern age, in which the author exceeded the speed of sound and was installed as a member of the exclusive "Mach Busters" club. A New Zealander of Scottish descent, C. E. Kay was still a boy when a ten-shilling aeroplane joy-ride fired his ambition to become a pilot. In 1926 he worked his passage to England, and was granted a short service commission with the R.A.F. Within two years he was trying his hand at record-breaking, and set out with Harold Piper in a newly-designed monoplane, the Desoutter Marl II, to challenge the London to Sydney record. This was a journey on which keen eyesight and quick thinking were often more important than the rudimentary cockpit instruments...' The dust jacket is well worn with creasing, small tears and tape repair. The front inside page has been removed but the book remains tight and bright.
