Description

Gold in the River by F. W. G. Miller. Illustrations by John Husband. 'F. W. G. Miller's light-hearted account of his gold prospecting days in Central Otago, was first published in 1949. This is a new and revised edition. F. W. G. Miller had a steady job as a senior reporter on The Press in Christchurch in 1930, when the Depression first hit the country. Suddenly, along with so many others, he found himself out in the street, jobless. After a spell at ditch-digging in the Dunedin City Reserve he took the advice of a friend and decided to try his hand at gold prospecting in Central Otago. For five years he lived in or near the Clutha Gorge, for much of the time in the stone cave-dwelling depicted on the back of this jacket, sluicing just enough gold to keep his family fed and clothed. Then he staked a claim some distance from the river, and there met with considerable success until daily journalism, in improving times, recalled him to the city.' The dust jacket has light to medium general wear with medium sized chip on the top edge but the book remains in a very tight and tidy condition.
