Description

Steam Over the Mamakus Compiled by John L. Stichbury. 'This booklet has been provided firstly as a companion for the Railway Enthusiasts Society trip on March 24th 1962 and secondly as a lasting reference work covering one of the best known railways in New Zealand. Thanks to the tourist attractions at Rotorua this line has probably seen more passenger trains than any other Provincial line. And it is also a very fine railway, Its easy curves, such as the one over a mile long of 102 chain radius just about half-way from Morrinsville to Kiwitahi and easy grades as far as Tirau give way to the steepest Main-Line grades (outside of Otira tunnel) in the country over the Mamaku bank. But even here speeds are not severely restricted by curves.'
