Description

Ferrymead Railway Guide Book by Colin E. Dash. 'Established in the early 1960s, the Ferrymead Railway follows for most of its right-of-way, the original embankment and formation of the Christchurch Ferrymead Railway of 1863. It is however laid to the standard gauge of the N.Z. Railways (3ft 6in; 1067mm) and not the gauge of the Canterbury Provincial Railways. (5ft 3in; 1600mm) The railway system with its associated museum, is being developed as part of the Ferrymead Trust's Historic Park and Technological Museum. Relying almost entirely on voluntary labour, progress has been steady over the years, with a great deal of work and restoration still to be done. Regular train operations were commenced in 1972, with passenger trains operating most Sundays and Public Holidays, as well as the Christmas and School Holiday periods.'
