Description

The Oxford Library of Classic English Short Stories. 'Edition Guild Publishing London (by arrangement with Oxford University Press), First Impression, 1989. Book Club edition CN6347, with an Introduction by Roger Sharrock, comprises two hardback volumes in one slipcase. The two volumes of Classic English Short Stories have been compiled to reflect the excellence and variety of shirt fiction written in English during the twentieth century. The first volume covers the years from the turn of the century to 1956 and the stories included amply demonstrate the change in attitudes and aesthetics that occurred during that time, a period often restless and impatient and dominated by two world wars. The second volume of short stories draws from work written during the period 1956-1975. Throughout those years foreign writers exerted an increasing influence on short fiction written in English. Represented in this selection are the leading US writers whose work continued to be read widely in the UK, and also a number of Commonwealth writes from such far flung countries as Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Nigeria, and the West Indies.' Book One has a few 'dog eared' corners of some early pages but overall a very tight and tidy collection.
