Description

Erewhon by Samuel Butler. Edited by Peter Mudford. When the traveler Biggs, having traversed the giant mountain range, discovers the remote Erewhonians, he is interested to discover that they treat their sick like criminals and their criminals like sick people and that machines have been forbidden - we object to progress' says the Professor of Worldly Wisdom. Samuel Butler (1835-1902), a vigorous opponent of the social and religious shams of his time, began to write his satirical novel shortly after he had read The Origin of Species, which influenced him greatly. In this novel, Butler satirically describes a utopian society, using the civilization of 'Erewhon' ('nowhere,' scrambled) to satirize beliefs popular in the England of his day. Butler wrote a sequel to the novel, Erewhon Revisited. The book has light general wear but remains tight and bright.
