Description

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. Translated from the Russian by Constance Garnett. With illustrations by John Groth. 'War and Peace was begun in 1862 and finished seven years later. Anna Karenina was completed in two years, in 1877. After these two great novels, Tolstoy abandoned his beliefs and way of living for the simplicity of peasant life, and described the changeover in Confession published in 1882. Several other books followed including The Death of Ivan Iiyich and Resurrection. Because of new beliefs, family life became unbearable and in October 1910 Tolstoy escaped from home with Alexandra, his youngest daughter and confidante. He became ill at a little railway station in central Russia and died in the stationmaster's room in early November.' The dust jacket has much wear and tape repair. Missing chips and rubbed edges (now covered with clear protector. The book has light to medium general wear with some staining along the page edges and a few print extra on the bottom of some pages - but holding together well. **NB** A LARGE BOOK THAT WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL FREIGHT.
