'While taking pictures for this book I was struck by the diversity of what I saw. It occurred to me several times that it was presumptuous to use the title I chose. There was no hope of showing the character of all New Zealanders - nor even, with careful selection, of the essential nature of New Zealanders. The times has passed. Stereotypes no longer apply. And then it occurred to me that perhaps after all, through the contributions, it is possible to claim that title. Those who have joined me in contributing to this book could now be classed typical New Zealanders. Not 50 years ago. We have Americans, a Urewera Maori, a part-Maori who is half Irish, A New Zealander of 3rd generation Scottish descent, Dave Simmons, also a New Zealander, and myself, a Polish refugee.' The dust jacket has some wear with some small closed tears and curls but the book remains tight and bright.
