Waiuta Ghosts: The Meanderings of a Quartz-miner
Description
Waiuta Ghosts: The Meanderings of a Quartz-miner Edited by Charles Henry Chandler. Signed with an inscription by the author. ':My dozing in a hospital bed was suddenly disturbed when a :Wild Westcoaster" was wheeled in, waving his arms about and crying out, "I'm a man of authority here!" He was placed alongside me in the ward, and from then on there was never a dull moment. This intruder on my torpid state was something new in my experience - something different, a character, an original. The uninhibited story of his wild life in a small West Coast township, Waiuta, gushed forth - a spate of words! I had to confess that I had never heard of Waiuta, thus earning myself the utmost contempt and pity, but I soon became an authority on the place. I was given an unvarnished account of dangerous work underground and boisterous living above - of drinking, gambling, fighting, loving above ground, and slogging, swearing., sweating below. That was life in the quartz-mining township of Waiuta, but now Waiuta is a ghost-town. I heard it all with embellishment, and suggested to the narrator that he should write it down for the interest and amusement of that distinctive type - the West-coaster, in whom it would stir memories fond and otherwise." The book has light to medium general wear with creasing of the covers and some rusting on the staples. However all black and white plates appear to be present and the binding block is solid. A scarce copy .
