The Last Antarctic Heroes
Description
The Last Antarctic Heroes by Lennard Bickel. With a Foreword by Rt. Hon. Lord Shackleton.' With the South Pole conquered by Amundsen and Scott, Ernest Shackleton planned 'the greatest polar journey of all time' - the crossing on foot, of the vast Antarctic continent. Shackleton and his team sailed from England for the Antarctic in the Endurance in August 1914. A few months later, the Aurora sailed south of McMurdo Sound with a second group of men who would lay supply depots on the Ross Ice Shelf for the transcontinental party. Endurance was crushed by pack ice, and the survival story of Shackleton and his men has hitherto overshadowed that of his other team. These men were castaways too, marooned by the loss of Aurora and left with little more than the clothes they wore. For eight months they laid down the precious supplies for the men who never came and existed through two savage Antarctic winters. All suffered, some died.' The book has medium general wear with some liquid damage along the bottom of the book and creasing of the covers. This book remains most readable but with noted faults.
