Mountain Enginemen
Description
Mountain Enginemen by Tom Masterson. 'Once upon a time the ambition of most boys was to become an engine driver (and that meant STEAM), and when young Tom Masterson went to work in the coal mines this ambition was strengthened by the fascination he found in the powerful little steam engines which hauled the coal from the mines for shipment from Westport on the West Coast of New Zealand. After some years' wait he achieved the first step towards his goal; in 1925, at the age of twenty, he was appointed an engine driver. In this book Mr Masterson tells of his experiences during a decade or so on the footplate, a decade which gave many people more than their share of trouble and hardships in Depression conditions. In many ways life was difficult for the men who lived in the Railway Company's huts in the high country of the North Island - money was short, entertainments were few, the bachelor huts cold and comfortless, the work often hard, dirty and wearisome - but with their irrepressible joie de vivre the young enginemen managed to extract a tremendous amount of fun from life - an enjoyment which the author's wit and skill as a raconteur passes on to his readers.' The dust jacket has light general wear but the book remains in a very tight and tidy condition.
